Dirty Coal Plants
A tombstone for mankind?

Stop Plant Washington!

Sure, this page is ugly.  But it isn't nearly as ugly as the idea of another smoke belching, water depleting, mountain destroying coal plant in Georgia!

Plant Washington is a proposed 850MW coal fired plant to be located near Sandersville, Georgia in Washington County.  The owner would be a coalition of Georgia EMCs called Power4Georgians.  The largest and most influential member of the coalition is Cobb Energy, which is involved in litigation between the members/owners of Cobb EMC and the Directors and President of Cobb EMC & Cobb Energy, one Dwight Brown.

The organizers of this site believe that coal is an inappropriate, unhealthy and dangerous power source for which there are far better alternatives, because there is no such thing as clean coal.

Coal mining is absolutely devastating to the environment, beauty and recreational value of the mountains of the U.S.  Just drive through the back roads of Appalachia and West Virginia and you'll see the damage - polluted streams, dead ecosystems, flattened or terraced mountains.  In short, coal mining ruins the beautiful places of the world.

Burning coal releases carbon dioxide back into the atmosphere that was removed millions of years ago.  Whether you believe in global warming or not, how can it be a good thing to change the chemistry of our atmosphere and return it to the composition that supported dinosaurs and huge swamp loving trees?

Burning coal releases heavy metals that were bound up into the rock into the air where all of us, in every state and every country, must breathe it and suffer the health effects.  These metals include mercury, lead, arsenic, thallium, and even uranium.

Coal plants require a large amount of water for cooling.  Plant Washington proposes to pump that water from an underground aquifer.  Like many states, Georgia's aquifers are being depleted.  This precious resource is better reserved for producing food than for cooling a coal plant.

Nuclear, Distributed Solar, and to a lesser extent, wind and biomass are far better alternatives.
